EMDR or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (it’s a mouthful, we know!), is a therapy that was developed by Francine Shapiro in 1987 for the treatment of PTSD.
Since then, EMDR therapy has been scientifically proven to be an effective treatment for Post-Traumatic Stress, phobias, panic attacks, anxiety disorders, depression, stress, sexual and physical abuse, disturbing memories, complicated grief, addictions, chronic pain, and migraines.
So what is EMDR therapy?
EMDR therapy utilizes bilateral stimulation (BLS) in the form of eye movements, audio, or tapping to help the brain process memories or experiences that continue to have a negative impact in the present.
EMDR therapy essentially helps the brain reintegrate the memory or experience and store it in the proper place, so that the memory is still there, but the painful feelings, physical sensations, and disturbing thoughts or images are not.
EMDR Therapy can help with:
➝ Decreasing distress associated with painful memories.
➝ Improving your self esteem and relationships with others.
➝ Providing relief from symptoms and distressing body sensations.
➝ Improving your ability to cope with and navigate current and future triggers.
